Yeah, get some!William Gormanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00508498506920703368noreply@blogger.comBlogger18125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7056697419112608100.post-65004177692951847482011-04-26T15:30:00.000-07:002011-04-26T15:30:31.410-07:00All Good Things Must Come To An EndWell, it looks like this is going to be my last blog post here in Rome. We're finishing up all of our work, the semester ends on Friday, and we leave this weekend. It's been a great time and it's hard to believe it's almost over already. These last few weeks have been pretty busy and there hasn't been much time to update here, so I'm going to roll it all into one.

First off, we had three big site visits the last few weeks, the EUR Complex, Mussolini's idea of the Fascist City, Trajan's Market, and Hardian's Villa, both ruins. EUR was something completely different than we have seen in our time here. It is located in the southern part of the city, far from the city center. It is a perfectly ordered city as it was planned and the architecture is all the Fascist interpretation of ancient Roman rules.

Trajan's Market is an ancient market in the city center, right near the forum. It is now a museum, but the form of the ancient market is still extremely visible. We were able to move through the entire complex and spent some time sketching there as well.

Hadrian's Villa was very nice to see. We've learned about it in lots of classes up to this point and the complex is absolutely beautiful, so it was something we all really wanted to see. The area was beautiful, even on the rainy day. We were all glad to finally get ther, we spent some time walking around, and had some sketching time here as well.

One of the best things we got to do over the last few weeks was attend the Easter Concert at Parco Della Musica. The concert was Mozart's Requiem and it was absolutely phenomenal. The architecture of the auditorium is great enough, but to see a concert that good in there was a great experience and I am extremely glad we had the opportunity to get to see it.

Two of the best opportunities on the trip came within a week of each other. I was lucky enough to get tickets to attend both Palm Sunday and Easter masses at the Vatican with the Pope. It was an incredible opportunity to be able to attend mass said by the Pope and they were certainly two masses that I will never forget. Both masses took place in St. Peter's Square rather than in the basilica, and the square was absolutely packed with people both times. Half of the square was filled with chairs and the rest was standing room, without a single empty spot to see.

Finally, our final project was due last week. Our project was to take a facade in Rome that we had already analyzed and take the rules used in that to designa modern facade. I was extremely excited about the project and I realized that I really enjoy designing facades. I was happy with how my facade turned out and the jury went extremely well also. This is definitely a project that I am extremely happy with and it will certainly end up in my portfolio.

Well, I'm glad you've all read my blog this semester, I wish there was more, but unfortunately, as the title of this post says, all good things must come to an end. I hope you enjoyed following my semester as much as I enjoyed experiencing it and documenting it for you!

OK, there should be pictures with most of this post, but I'm having trouble with the server on the website uploading pictures, so they will be added as soon as I can get that fixed, so stay tuned for more to come.William Gormanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00508498506920703368noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7056697419112608100.post-37923775339037605642011-04-10T12:04:00.000-07:002011-04-15T08:49:12.173-07:00To The South We Go!Well, last week we took a trip to Southern Italy, Naples, Capri, Stabia, Pompei, and Sorrento. On Monday we left Rome and arrived in Naples. We spent two nights there before travelling to Stabia where we spent our final two nights. From Naples and Stabia we took day trips to the other cities.

Day 1
We left Rome pretty early on Monday morning and we arrived in Naples before lunch. We dropped our things off at our hotel and made a few sketching stops in Naples. We first went to the Spanish Quarter and drew a street section on one of the busiest streets we could find. After that we visited Galleria Umbertoi and drew another street section to compare the two. After that we walked to a few more places before final stopping at the Duomo in Naples for our final sketching assignment of the day.
Day 2
On the second day we took an early morning ferry to Capri, a beautiful island right off of Naples. The island was incredible and we spent almost the entire day at Casa Malaparte, an incredible house that sits on the top of a cliff and is surrounded by ocean. We spent hours sketching there and it wasn't even close to enough. I was able to fill two sketchbook pages and easily could have done more. On the ferry ride back we ran into a storm, which made it a little interesting but fun as well. This was probably the best day of the trip, for the simple fact that the house was incredible.
Day 3
On our third day we left the hotel in Naples. We took a bus to different settlements along the coast where there were several different sites of ruins, some actually very well intact. We visited three different sites, the first two, temples as well as a cave, the second, a small almost city, and the third an ampitheater. After those three visits we made our way to the youth institute where we were staying in Stabia.
Day 4
On day 4, we left Stabia early to catch a train to Pompei. Pompei was incredible but absolutely nothing like I expected. I expected ruins sort of out in nowhere, but there is a city built next to the ruins. There was so much there to see as well and everything was so intricately done. It was easy to get a pretty good understanding of how the entire city worked. After Pompei, we all split in different directions. A few of us jumped back on the train and visited Sorrento, another city along the coast. Sorrento was small but absolutel beautiful. The view was incredible, and even from 100 feet up, the water was so clear. It seemed to be mostly a small coastal city that was built around tourism, because the streets that we walked were lined with local shops selling alcohol, sandals that the city is famous for, and little tourist items. When we got back to our hotel, we went out to the field next to us to play some basketball. A few of us played a quick game of horse before three little kids came over to us and asked if we wanted to play soccer with them. We played with them for a little bit before some older kids, maybe 15 or 16, asked if we wanted to play with them. We played with them for a pretty long time and they were a lot better than us, but I managed to score a goal, the highlight of my game.
Day 5
Day 5, our last day, we split up into groups again. I stayed with a few people in Stabia, because we hadn't really had a chance to see the city that we were staying in too well. We had a small sketching assignment early on then we were free for most of the day. We stayed close to the water, walked around a stopped a few places before eating lunch then heaing back to the hotel to grab our luggage and head to the train. We took the train to Naples where we then jumped on another train to Rome.
We started very early in the morning and made three site visits. The first, was to Richard Meier's Jubilee Church. Now, we've studied this church a lot, but to actually see it was pretty incredible. The church is exactly like pictures look, but there is so much about it that you cant understand from pictures. We spent about an hour sketching there and I am very happy with the way the page turned out, I think the entire day was one of my best for my sketchbook.
Our next stop was to the construction site for Santiago Calatrava's Citta Dello Sport, which is two twin buildings, one a stadium and the other a pool. At this point in the construction, the foundational arches are poured in concrete for both stadiums, as well as the bridge that connnects them. Also, the structure for the roof of the pool is on, with the actual roof yet to be assembled. The roof structure is so intricate and was definitely one of the coolest designs we've seen yet. In fact, the entire complex that Calatrava designed is awesome and I definitely want to come back to see it when it is done. I love stadium design, and this may be one of my favorites once it is completed.
Our third and final stop was to the MACRO Museum, the museum of contemporary art in Rome. Except for one really funny exhibit that was just doodles on the wall, the art wasn't very appealing, but the building was very nice. It was an extremely modern in fill building. The best part about the building may have been the bathrooms, which were completely mirrors (except for in the stalls and the doors to the stalls) and when you went to wash your hands, the white sink lit up red and all the lights around it shut off, so that was all you could see. We spent some time setching, mostly on the roof until it started raining.
All in all, it was probably one of the best days for site visits yet. We saw three great sites, all three which I have wanted to see for some time, got some good sketching done, and saw some very successful modern architecture, which is a nice change from the city center. Our trip to Southern Italy is next week, so I'll be away then, but expect a post about when I return!William Gormanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00508498506920703368noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7056697419112608100.post-31816331008779043322011-04-01T12:17:00.000-07:002011-04-03T16:21:59.054-07:00One Quiet Week And One To Make A Video! So, next week we travel to Southern Italy for a few days, so I figured I would get caught up on blogging before that. I'm combining the last two weeks into one post (instead of the last three) because this week, in fact just yesterday, deserves its own post.

Anyway, we had a pretty quiet first week back after spring break. We were assigned the first of three parts of our final studio project (which we're now complete two and assigned the third), which was to draw as accurately and beautifully as possible a facade of a palazzo or courtyard that we were assigned somewhere in Rome. I think they all came out really well actually and I'm happy with my work and the building I was assigned (it was one of the easier ones to draw). The second part of the project was to take a big sheet of paper out to the building and spend several hours there analyzing it, mainly through different types of diagrams, treating the paper like a giant sketchbook. That was due today and that didn't turn out quite as well, at first. We spent an hour today overlapping all of our drawings on the sheet and they actually look a lot better. The third part of the project we were told today and will be officially assigned when we return from our trip. It will be to take the information we received from analysis and, using the exact same site, conditions, and dimensions, design a modern facade with contemporary materials. I'm looking forward to it.

We also did have one site visit in the first week we were back from spring break, we visited the Lateran Library, property of the Vatican and situated next to St. John Lateran Church. It was a great visit because it is a pretty modern building in an older area, but because of the design and materials it works really well. We spent some time there, inside and out, then visited the church (which a bunch of us had already been to), but I'll just let the pictures do the talking.
On Saturday, Justin, Speer, Tim and I went up to Villa Borghese to hang out in the park. Well, we ended up renting a four person bike/car thing for an hour and had an absolute blast. We raced some Italian kids in another one, gave little kids high fives as we drove past them, and did a little off roading too. We walked around the area for a bit more too and then started to make our way home and eventually ended up visiting Santa Susanna, the national church of the U.S. in Rome and stopped by in front of the U.S. Embassy on our way back too. On Sunday, we decided to try and go to mass at St. Peter's, but that didn't work out. We got to St. Peter's early on to look around and when the previous mass had ended we tried to go to the area designated for mass. We were told we couldn't enter and when we tried to tell them we were there for mass they told us it was in the Square, it wasn't. Instead, after standing outside waiting for mass for 5 or so minutes the Pope came to his window and gave a 15 audience to everybody in the square. No mass, but and audience with the Pope, I'll take it.

The next week, we had a visiting professor, Stanley Hallet, come do give us a photgraphy workshop. We ended up getting a week long assignment in which we were split up into groups of three and each group was assigned a piazza somewhere in Rome. We had to visit the piazza for several hours and, through photographs, document the space, the people, the architecture, and the experience. We then had to organize the pictures, add music to them, and make a video that represented both the space and our experience while visiting it. They all came out very well and hopefully I'll be able to post the video on here soon. Anyway, that's all for now, another post coming VERY soon.

I had hoped to go to Ireland, but by the time I tried to book tickets the price was way too high. So I decided to take the first few days off to relax after our week in Istanbul then I figured I would take a train somewhere in Italy for a day or two, but I got too lazy and that didn't work out either. So I spent the entire week in Rome relaxing and not much happened. Last week was Carnivale, however, so that was fun. On Tuesday night a bunch of us went up to Piazza del Popolo to see some kind of show, not really sure what it was, it was in Italian. Then we watched some fireworks and ended Carnivale with a confetti fight. Pretty fun. After that we decided we didn't want to go home so we headed to one of our local bars where they were watching Rome's soccer match. Rome was losing and nobody there was very happy at all, so we didn't stay very long. That was probably our busiest day of the week. A few people had family or friends come, but that's later in the semester for me. All in all it was a pretty relaxing week for me, I spent a few days sketching and the rest just walking around, which was pretty fun. Rome is a completely different city when you don't have to worry about class and can just enjoy the sites!William Gormanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00508498506920703368noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7056697419112608100.post-86048548181741877532011-03-13T10:33:00.000-07:002011-03-13T10:33:14.909-07:00Istanbul, Yes Please My FriendYea, I'm finally getting around to blogging about our trip to Istanbul, over a week later, but we just had spring break, I wasn't gonna blog during that week, but anyway, here it goes...

We left for Istanbul two weeks ago on Saturday and flew there by Pegasus Airlines (yea, I had never heard of it either) and the plane was so small that we had to take a bus from our terminal to the actual plane and board from the ground. The plane landed on the Asian side of Istanbul and we had to travel to the European side to get to our hotel (the city stretches over two different continents and yes I was in Asia!). We hit a good amount of traffic getting from Asia to Europe so by the time we got to our hotel it was pretty late. We had a group dinner on the seventh floor of the hotel our first night and the view was absolutely gorgeous, we had a perfect view of both the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia out the window. We had a traditional Turkish dinner, which was pretty good, but I couldn't have told you what any of it was. Later that night we walked around the neighborhood of our hotel and around the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, they were both incredible to see lit up at night. Before we went back to the hotel, we were treated to some free baklavah (or I guess technically it was pre-paid) and it was delicious! The first night I couldn't wait to go to bed, it was a pretty tiring day, but of course I was woken up at about 5:00 am by the call to prayer from the nearby mosques, yea that happened pretty much every night there.
It wasn't quite what i expected, but it was incredible nonetheless. It was really cool to see the changes made when it was converted from a church to a mosque and I enjoyed seeing the combination of the Muslim symbolism and artwork as well as the Christian artwork, mainly mosaic, that was uncovered when it became a museum. We spent about three hours or so in Hagia Sophia sketching and it wasn't nearly enough time, in fact I have to finish that page of my sketchbook still. While we were sketching though, we became a show. There were tons of people taking pictures of us, of us sketching, and even just our sketches. Some of the people were even getting closer to my sketchbook than I was just to see what I was doing. It was really nice as well to get a random flash or pre picture orange light in my face or on my page as I was trying to draw, but it was well worth it. When we were all done sketching we found these, what we thought at first, random x's on the floor. What we realized they were there for was to outline the circumference of the dome, so of course we turned it into a photo opportunity, everybody stood on their own x and we traced the path of the dome ourselves! After Hagia Sophia we went to the Basilica Cistern, which is just a huge underground room full of columns with a layer of water at the bottom. There were even fish swimming around inside! From there we went to the spice market, a market full of stands selling tea, spices, and Turkish Delight, which were delicious. After that we finished the day in two mosques around the area, all in all a pretty good first day.
We started off by visiting the Blue Mosque and from there we walked around the neighborhood around it out of the tourist area. The Blue Mosque was huge and very nice, but we were not there very long because it filled up with tourists pretty quickly. We sketched for about a half an hour in there before it became too crowded. I was surprised by the number of tourists though who seemed to not care about the Muslim culture. There were a good amount of women walking around with their heads uncovered and as we were coming in, I'm sure there would have been people who didn't take their shoes off if there wasn't somebody at the entrance telling us to. We visited a few more mosques that day before we broke, all very similar in main design, but each with their own intricacies that gave them a unique feel, it was very interesting to try and draw and diagram those subtle differences and it helped to relate all of my drawings together, not just the seperate buildings.

From there, although they were all incredible, the mosques began to somewhat blend together. We saw too many that were too similar and when we started to do other things in the city the mosques began to take somewhat of a backseat. Our first extra activity (besides our initial trip to the spice market) was going to a Turkish Bath! Most people were a little hesitant at first, and in fact some decided not to go, but I am so glad I did. The experience was interesting and I certainly won't forget it, and I felt so great afterwards. Our next activity was visitng the grand bazaar, which consists of hundreds of shops selling pretty much everything, from gold jewelry, to tourist souvenirs and antique Turkish items. It was also full of the most persistent sales people I have ever seen, and they would guess where you were from and yell to you in your language as you walked past. I heard everything from English, Turkish, Italian, Spanish, German, and more while I was walking through it. Several of the vendors actually thought I was Spanish and tried to talk to me in Spanish before English, while another guessed that I was from Texas. Our next activity was carpet shopping. One of our professors knows a dealer in Istanbul (who also has a factory in Maryland) that he met when he was a student studying there, so we visited his shop to see all the different carpets he had and some people even ended up buying some, not me, I would have but I had no room to bring it back and no money to pay for it, oh well, next time. Our last non mosque activity was visiting an old palace in the city. The palace was incredible and the tile work inside blew me away. They also had exhibition rooms full of the biggest jewels I had ever seen placed in random objects completely unnecessarily. If I had just one of those items I probably could have paid for college several times over. We tried to sketch in the palace, but anywhere that we could sketch was outdoors and it was just too cold. After the palace we all went back to Ismet's (the carpet guy, Uncle Ismet as he referred to himself) and had lunch, Turkish pizza. It was pretty good, but I prefer Italian and New York pizza. On our last night we had our second group dinner, this time it was on the Asian side of the city. We took a ferry there and it was awesome to see the city at night, because we could see the entire thing from one view or another.

All in all it was a really good week. Istanbul was incredible, the sights were phenomenal, and the culture, though very different, was extremely interesting and I'm glad I got to witness it. I will hopefully going back to Istanbul again, even more than once, and hopefully sooner rather than later!William Gormanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00508498506920703368noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7056697419112608100.post-82533822376602570042011-03-08T04:47:00.000-08:002011-03-08T04:47:21.467-08:00Notre Dame Design ReviewFor anybody who really knows me, especially for those who knew me when I was applying to and deciding where to go for college, it's no big secret that Notre Dame was by far my number one choice. Of course I didn't make it, and I love Catholic, but when we recently had the chance to attend a design review for the architecture program for Notre Dame in Rome I couldn't pass it up. It was a chance for me to compare what I wanted with what I have, and I am extremely happy with what I have.

The first thing I noticed when I walked into the review was that their drawings were pinned up with colored pins, multiple different colors on the same sheet of paper, uh-oh. The first thing we learned when pinning up at Catholic is to use grey, white, or clear pins, anything else is distracting and takes away from the drawings. I hadn't really seen people use colored pins because this rule was drilled into us early on freshman year, and let me tell you, it is extremely distracting. After looking passed the pins I tried to focus on the drawings, which were absolutely incredible. They were all hard lined, so they have an advantage on us (although I enjoy freehanding this semster, especially with the light tables) but they were still pencil on paper. Almost all of them also had one or two drawings done in water color, and they were done phenominally. The drawings were really where the professionalism that we're taught at Catholic seemed to end though. I don't mean that in a bad way, because there wasn't a lack of professionalism from Notre Dame, it just seemed that their focus was obviously on design and drawing quality and exactness rather than presentation. There seemed to be no or very little thought behind layout of sheets. Drawings were placed randomly and they were often moving back and forth between sheets. There was no progression through the presentation and nothing on the boards lined up, it seemed as if they just stuck drawings wherever they could fit them. Which was several places, because there was a good deal of white space. They were not overly cramped for space either yet they pinned up like they were. Boards were not lined up or matching on the wall, they seemed scattered, and people even pinned up in corners so that half of their presentation was perpendicular to the other half.

The quality of work was exceptional at Notre Dame, but the quality of presentation was certainly lacking, and I, along with the other Catholic students, noticed it right away. We've been taught to take pride in our work, whatever we produce, and to present it like we are presenting to clients, like we are trying to convince them to build this. That mentality was certainly lacking at Notre Dame, it seemed as if they were presenting to architects for a grade. When you can focus on the drawings and the design, it is easy to look passed a poor presentation and focus on what is produced. The idea behind the mentality at Catholic is that most clients know nothing to very little about architecture and the design process, so they have a hard time looking passed a poor presentation because it comes off as a lack of professionalism to them. I do not mean to bash Notre Dame because their work was phenomenal, I was extremely impressed with that and I am sure, if I had the opportunity to go there, I would have loved every day of it, but I am extremely happy with being at Catholic and extremely happy with the education I've received, and I think what I have is better for me than what I wanted.William Gormanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00508498506920703368noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7056697419112608100.post-125316306461480372011-02-20T14:29:00.000-08:002011-02-20T14:35:34.905-08:00Hey there, it's been a while, no?

It's been a while since I posted an update, and since the workload is relatively light right now, it seems like a good time, so here goes nothing.

The last two weeks have been relatively relaxing. The first week back after the trip north was quick and simple, it went by pretty fast and we didn't do much other than classes. We did get the chance to visit the Vatican Museum though, which was great. There was some absolutely incredible artwork in the museum, it was my first trip to the Vatican, and on our way out we got to see the double helix staircase! The building was absolutely beautiful as well and it was nice to have a day where we didn't have to worry about architecture, even though we all noticed it throughout the day and were astounded by the staircase we've heard about and seen pictures of so many times.

Earlier in that first week, for sketching class, we had the chance to visit Renzo Piano's Parco Della Musica and Zaha Hadid's MAXXI Museum, two of the very few modern projects in Rome. The were both incredible. Parco consists of three indoor theaters of varying sizes and an outdoor theater arranged together in a huge complex. We visited all three theaters shortly in size order from smallest to largest and each one was more incredible than the last. I would love to see a concert in any one of those halls, especially the biggest one. After that we went to MAXXI, which unfortunately was about half closed, so we didn't pay for the entrance, but we did see the exterior and the lobby interior and climb this really cool tree house, and hey we have another two months to go back and visit, right?
Our second week back was pretty quiet, on Tuesday our Derive project was due, the one where we wandered our way through the city. The presentation went really well but after a weekend working on it we were all pretty done so I'm glad it's over. Other than that the week was quiet, but on Friday we decided to go up north and visit the 1960 Olympic Village and Stadium Complex, which was absolutely incredible! We found the Olympic Stadium first but couldn't get inside, from there we found an open gate to the tennis complex and sat there for a while. We watched a couple of guys start to warm up before playing and then moved to a different court and saw two guys get into a pretty heated argument about whether a ball was out of bounds or not. After the tennis complex we stopped by the pool which was empty but huge. The pattern of the seats were really cool as well, they changed colors to look like waves moving throughout. After the pool we walked to the outdoor track, which was lined with huge statues from all different sports. We saw an awesome old fountain in front of the stadium and the ground was covered in mosaics depicting different events.
They're pretty run down apartments now but in 1960 I'm sure they were state of the art. I can easily see them being a great place to live with a little cleaning up. Each little block of houses had a central courtyard and an open air atrium staircase, plus the streets throughout the entire complex were named after the countries that lived on them, and of course we found the United States.

One more week to go before we go to Istanbul and our second studio project is due Wednesday, but its not too difficult. This may be my last post before I go to Istanbul but there will definitely be a big one when I get back so keep an eye out for it in about two weeks!
William Gormanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00508498506920703368noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7056697419112608100.post-15902765771977413102011-02-05T09:10:00.000-08:002011-02-07T12:49:53.666-08:00A Week in the NorthWow, what a week! Five cities in seven days is a great week, when you add the fact that it was actually for school, even better. We had some great experiences this week, saw some truly awesome things, and got the chance to study and analyze some incredible buildings. Not to mention what a great time it was to be with twenty friends riding trains around every other day (including the one that broke down), staying together in hotels, and experiencing some cities, sights, and architecture we have never seen before. Now I know that everybody is dying to hear about the trip in detail, so here's a city by city breakdown:

Our first stop was Florence. Florence was a good start for us. It was relatively small, or at least the area that we covered was, and the architecture that was very familiar to all of us, we've only seen and heard about the churches and bridges in Florence for three years, I guess it should be somewhat familiar. When we first arrived in Florence we walked from our hotel to Santa Maria Novella. It wasn't too cold so we diagramed the facade, pretty much the only sketching we did outside all week, but we didn't get to go inside. We broke for lunch and met at Brunelleschi's Duomo. We climbed to the top of the Duomo and 463 dizzying stairs later, we had the most incredible view of the entire city. The wind was ridiculous one side of the dome, so much so that it was actually uncomfortable to go to the edge. It died down on the other side though and we managed to get some great pictures of the group. That night we walked around as a group and had a group dinner, a delicious Florentine steak. The next day was almost as good, we started at SanLorenzo where we had a chance to see the Old Chapel by Brunelleschi and the New Chapel by Michelangelo. Unfortunately the Laurentian Library was closed, maybe next time. We also went inside San Lorenzo itself (although we had to pay, which we had to do for most churches in Florence and Venice, weird right?). After that we got a chance to see Michelangelo's David which was another great opportunity. After that we went to the Piazza della Santissima Annunziata, once we were done there we were free for the rest of the day. We made our way to Piazza Michelangelo on Eric and Marina's suggestion and then wandered the city. One of the most memorable times in Florence was when we wandered into a random open church. It was tiny but it was beautiful and while we were in there we got recruited by a maintenance man to help him move some of the furniture around, so we spent the next twenty minutes rearranging the church. The nights in Florence were relatively quiet but were still a great time, after an early morning we were off to the next city.

Venice was by far the most beautiful city we visited, but it was so easy to get lost in some parts and the others were so packed with tourists and pidgeons that it was hard to fully enjoy it. Our major stop in Venice was San Marco, which was hugely dissapointing. Not only did we have to pay to get inside, but we could not take pictures and everything but the aisles were roped off, forcing us to continue to walk around and leaving little room to sketch. It's a shame too because the church itself was incredible and we did not get a chance to enjoy it. We got a chance to visit a museum by Carlo Scarpa shortly after that and I was very impressed with that. While I wouldn't say I'm a huge fan of Scarpa in general I certainly appreciate his work. His attention to detail is incredible and some of the smallest components are planned out to a great extent. Not to mention I am a huge fan of his staircases. Venice is certainly a city that is geared towards couples, not college kids, so everything closed down somewhat early and our nights were pretty quiet again. The next day we stopped in two churches, Il Redentore and San Giorgio Maggiore, both done in very similar styles and both very impressive. We spnet a second night in Venice and the next morning we were off to our half day trip to Verona.
Verona, the home of Romeo and Juliet, was apretty quick stop for us. We started off looking at the facade of a bank done by Scarpa. From there we moved to Juliet's balcony. The balcony was a lot lower than I thought it would be but the whole thing was pretty cool, the walls were covered with people who wroet their name next to their partner's or peopl who wrote love notes, or just people who wanted to graffiti. From there we made our way to the Castelvecchio Museum, an old castle which was redesigned by, yup that's right you guessed it, Carlo Scarpa! This was definitely his most impressive work that we saw. There was not a detail that we all didn't love and the place turned out to be like a maze, with bridges and stairs that led everywhere. Again I loved every single one of his staircases. From Verona we made our way to Vicenza.
We got to Vicenza pretty late after the day in Verona, so we just walked the city a bit once we arrived and that night had our second group dinner. The next day was the big one, Palladiopalooza! It seems like Andrea Palladio designed every building in the city of Vicenza, I know he certainly designed every one we looked at. We started off at Villa Roltunda, which was slightly outside of the city but was defintely my favorite building of the day. We sketched outside for a long time, it was really nice in the sun, after that we got let inside and only spent about a half hour in there sketching because it was freezing. We decided by the end of the day hat Palladio's designs did not allow for heating systems because not one of his buildings were warm. From there we saw several of his Palazzos and made our last stop at Teatro Olimpico, a theater tht was designed and built to look like the street outside. It was pretty cool, but by the point we were all pretty tired, so we were let go and wandered the city a bit before we moved on to Milan the next day.

Our final stop for the week was Milan. Our first stop in Milan was the Piazza del Duomo. We spent some time inside the church sketching and from there we went on top of the roof (we didn't make it all the way to the top, the last twenty steps or so were too icy and were closed off). We still had a great view though. From there we walked through the Galleria Vittorio Emmanuele II, and broke off for the day from there. We wandered a bit to an old castle and spent some time in the park behind it. We wandered a bit more and found another park and then called it a night for exploring. We had another group dinner on our last night of the trip and went looking for something to do after, but no luck. The next day we took an architectural tour of the changing Milan. It was a tour of recent architecture in Milan, and it was nice to see some modern work, even if we didn't like all of it it was a refreshing change of pace. We also took a bus around the city, which was good to finall get off our feet. after that we headed home, an adventure in itself. About half hour into our train ride home the train just stopped in the middle of the tracks. We found out that the train broke down and so we needed to board another train for the rest of the trip. About an hour later the second train arrived and another hour and a hlaf later everybody was on board. After a three and a half hour delay we were finally moving again. We pulled into Rome at 12:30 when we were scheduled to arrive at 9:00. It was nice to be back in my own back after a week. All in all it was a pretty good trip, I can't wait for the other two trips to Istanbul and Southern Italy!

William Gormanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00508498506920703368noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7056697419112608100.post-57777047666333357082011-01-27T13:07:00.000-08:002011-01-27T13:07:34.049-08:00More Pictures!More pictures from today that Eric just sent us, enjoy and see you in a week!
It's going to be a great time and I'm pretty excited about it, but, since we're going to be moving around so much, I won't have my computer and will be pretty much unreachable. It's alright though, I'll be back next Friday night!

Anyway, a lot has happened since my last post, so I've got a good amount to talk about to hold you over for the next week. Yesterday we had our first jury in Rome and it actually went pretty well for everybody. Not surprisingly everybody had great projects, and maybe even less surprisingly, the jurors still did have some critiques, mainly for the synthesis part in whcih we "redesigned" our assigned piazza. Oh well, they were good comments and they really just highlighted he difference in thinking between Americans and Europeans when we talk about urban spaces. It was good though, because that type of dynamic thinking can only help us. They also seemed to be very impressed with everybody's drawings and layout, which honestly were all great. I really enjoyed this project and I'm very happy about the way it turned out, hopefully I'll have some pictures to share once we document the project. We haven't gotten our next project yet which is kind of nice, it's nice to take a break and enjoy our trip.
It was a really nice place and is actually a lot bigger than it seemed. We started off in this courtyard, and were all relieved when they told us we couldn't bring our backpacks inside (we didn't want to carry them) or do any sketching (we needed a permit but none of us wanted to do "work" anyway). So we got to enjoy the museum as "tourists" for the first time since classes started really. Anyway, we spent some time in the courtyard, taking funny pictures, posing like statues, and, as Eric called it "album art posing". After that, we all entered and went our seperate ways. The museum was real nice, but was mostly statues and busts, which are nice, but can get a little tiring after three hours. The best part was a passageway between the two sides of the museum that over looked the Forum Romana. It was a great view, a nice break from statues, and a great place to sit and rest for a while on a pretty nice day. All in all it was pretty cool, I got to see a great view of the Forum, a painting by Leonardo Da Vinci, some ruins that were encompassed in the museum and some pretty cool statues, here are a few of my favorite pictures from the day (all the funny ones from the courtyard are on other cameras, I'll have to get my hands on them at some point):

Yes, that last one is a kid wrestling a duck. Anyway, that's it for now, I'll be back in a week with a big from the week north!
In Italy, after Christmas, there is a month long sale on clothing, or saldi, where prices all over are reduced dramatically. Well, this was the last weekend of the sale, and despite not wanting to spend more money than completely necessary, it got me! Yesterday, while waiting to get on a light table to trace my elevations and section, I went for a walk and ended up buying a belt. Real Italian leather and not too expensive at all and I really needed one, since mine broke last week.

Anyway, our project is coming along nicely, most everything is on paper (besides our synthesis ideas and lettering) and the rendering is well under way too. We should be done in plenty of time for jury Wednesday, hopefully I'll have some pictures to post when it's all done!William Gormanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00508498506920703368noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7056697419112608100.post-76629703195253731412011-01-21T12:06:00.000-08:002011-01-21T12:06:39.738-08:00Project OneProject one is well under way, in fact it has been for almost two weeks and it is due Wednesday. If you didn't know, our first project is to analyze a piazza somewhere in Rome, which was assigned to us randomly. Today me and Marisa finally put pencil to our FINAL paper and it looks great, after two weeks of studying, information gathering, underlays, and diagrams after diagrams, we are finally starting our final product. It's pretty nerve wracking, but the underlays look great and our layout has come together nicely, it's production time! Hopefully it turns out well...

Anyway, jury for project one is on Wednesday and project starts Tuesday. On Friday, we leave for a week long trip to Northern Italy, I can't believe it is hear so quickly. This is the first of our three week long trips, this one is to Northern Italy, next is to Istanbul, and our last is to Southern Italy. There is a lot to get done before we leave (I'm doing laundry right now in fact so I have enough clothes) but it'll be here real soon and I'm excited!William Gormanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00508498506920703368noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7056697419112608100.post-47213263206904971192011-01-20T11:41:00.000-08:002011-01-20T11:41:31.158-08:00DeriveOn Tuesday, we got our first sketching project called derive. We were split into groups of three people, eache group was given a random metro stop on the outskirts of the city, that was our starting point. We had to wander our way back to our studio in the center of the city without any direction. We were allowed to look at our map only at the very beginning to get an idea of the direction we had to go, other than that we had to determine our path based on our surroundings. My group started at the Barberini metro stop, which was right across the street from the Fountain of Triton, so of course we spent a good half hour sketching that.

After that we wandered our way to the Spanish Steps (which of course were in the wrong direction, but none of us had been there yet). They were absolutely incredible and I'm glad we ended up at that top so we could walk down them and no up. We spent a long time sketching here as well, probably over a half hour, before we continued.

After our stop at the Spanish Steps we began to actually do our wandering. I couldn't tell you the route we took from there, and in fact I looked at a map to try to recreate it and I couldn't, but it turned out very well. We wandered for a little, not knowing where we were, stopping in some beautiful churches, and trying to avoid shopping streets so Kelly wasn't tempted. Eventually we found THE BEST gelato place and, without even knowing, ended up right in front of the Pantheon. Of course, I had to photograph and sketch the dome.

The dome is absolutely incredible, I would love to be there when it is pouring or snowing to see a column of rain or snow falling inside. Today, while sketching at the Spanish Steps, a guy started a conversation with me (he wanted me to pay him to draw a picture of me, when I said no he quickly left) and asked the usual question, are you a student, where are you studying, where are you from? Well when I told him I was American, his response was "Oh, Obama Obama." That is now the third person that has responded in the exact same fashion, by saying Obama's name twice, including a bartender and a priest. What I don't understand is why everybody responds with his name twice, are they making sure I know who the president is? Trying to show me that they do? Or do they just like him that much?William Gormanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00508498506920703368noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7056697419112608100.post-74183502234662670052011-01-15T12:01:00.000-08:002011-01-15T12:01:45.256-08:00The Tomb of St. PaulSo it's been a few days since I updated and there's a lot to say. First off, classes started this week and I can tell that it is going to be a good semester. Studio is never bad so I expect that to go well, but for sketching and history, as Eric put it, "The city is your classroom." Our first sketching class went well, but I didn't get to finish my elevation, at least I have some time to go back and do so. Yesterday we took a tour of the 7 hills of Rome and it was absolutely incredible. We had a chance to go on the roof of the Il Vittoriano, where we had a view of the entire city of Rome and beyond.

After that we continued to walk, and made our way into some gorgeous churches. On the way home we stopped in a few more and each one was as incredible as the last. In fact, we've adopted a new rule, if a church is open we're going in.

Today was gonna be a relaxing day, I slept late and got some homework done, then a few of us decided to go to the Circo Massimo. That didn't happen. In fact, we walked in the complete opposite direction. We ended up walking about 3 miles or so south of the city center and on the way managed to find an incredibly cheap grocery store, a playground, some Italian political posters which are now hanging in our room, and the best for last, the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls. It's named that because it is outside the walls of the city of Rome, but it contains the tomb of St. Paul, which is just the beginning of how incredible this church is. It is absolutely enormous, around the walls are portraits of each and every Pope, as well as numerous saints. The main attraction, of course, is the tomb of St, Paul. The marble front to the sarcophagus is exposed behind a small fence. Placed in front of it is a kneeler, where I took my opportunity to say a decade of the rosary in front of St. Paul. I got to my apartment unpacked and went on an "adventure" and I can already tell it's going to be a great semester with some awesome people in an incredible city! I'm pretty excited (if you couldn't tell) but for now there's not much going on...yet, so not that much to write, but be sure to check back, we've got four months of this!William Gormanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00508498506920703368noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7056697419112608100.post-75988675925642546162011-01-03T10:24:00.000-08:002011-01-03T10:24:00.586-08:00Sooo..... I'm blogging!Well, as most of you should already know, I'm going to be studying abroad for a semester in Rome! Our first assignment? Create a blog to document our semester, so here it is! Hopefully, this will be a good way for me to keep in touch with people and for everybody to see what I'm up to, but for now, I'm just getting ready to go and I can't wait! There's so much to do though, so of course I'm relaxing on the couch blogging. I don't really have much to say now, so I guess that's it, hopefully everybody will come back to see what I'm up to in Roma!William Gormanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00508498506920703368noreply@blogger.com0
